The area, shaped by post-war residential expansion, is rich in Mid-century Modernist architecture — a style that informed the design direction of this project.

Overview

Perched on an elevated site in Geelong, Jinjella House enjoys sweeping views across the Barwon River, Greater Geelong, and Port Phillip Bay. Drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian principles, the design embraces a sense of privacy from the street, while opening generously at the rear to capture northern light, coastal breezes, and panoramic views. From the street, a grounded, tectonic façade reveals little of the interior beyond, reinforcing the notion of a home that unfolds gradually. As you descend towards the entry, clerestory windows offer subtle glimpses of what lies within.

Inside, the home reveals itself — expanding outwards toward the landscape. A central skylight washes light down the stairwell to the lower level, where a rammed earth spine anchors the plan. This wall acts as both a thermal mass and a spatial divider, separating the master suite from the living zones. It responds to the irregular, wedge-shaped site by aligning two axes, while also evoking the grounded monumentality of Michael Heizer’s earthworks — a visual and structural element that draws the eye toward the view beyond.

A private, grounded home that opens to the horizon — balancing solid street presence with openness, light and expansive coastal views.

We wanted it to feel anchored in the land — protective from the street, but open and light once you’re inside.
